Diffusion and Innovation of Snapchat
Diffusion and Innovation of Snapchat:
In today's society, social media is so important. Its a part of our everyday lives and without it most people would be lost. Social media is used for entertainment and communication. Snapchat is one of the most popular social media apps in the world. According to https://www.statista.com/statistics/545967/snapchat-app-dau/#:~:text=As%20of%20the%20third%20quarter,in%20previous%20quarter%20of%202020. Snapchat has almost 530 million active users. Snapchat was originally launched in 2011 and quickly became popular. The CEO and co-founder of Snapchat is Evan Spiegel. He is to date, one of the richest social media entrepreneurs. Snapchat is an easy app to use. It allows you to take pictures, send pictures to your friends, link your contacts to find friends, and use filters. Snapchat is currently taking over texting due to the newer feature that allows users to text, call, and FacetTime all through the app. Who needs to text through iMessage when you can do it all through one single app?
Snapchat heavily appeals to the younger generations known as "GenZ". Recently, older generations have been joining in on the fun to see what its all about. Snapchat displays itself as an app geared more towards teenagers, but all ages are free to use it. There are some downsides to Snapchat even though its fun. For example, in high school, everyone would post all over their stories on Snapchat when they got invited to big events or parties. Kids started to become depressed if they weren't invited because its not easy seeing all your friends having fun on social media when you aren't. Another problem is Cyberbullying. Although this can be done through any app, its extremely easy to do on Snapchat. Having the ability to post on your story where all your friends on the app can see leads to mean posts about people. Snapchat can cause anxiety, depression, cyberbullying, and major FOMO. Snapchat is also extremely addicting and therefore it consistently messes with teenagers sleep schedules.
Overall, Snapchat is extremely fun when used in the right ways. Social media in general can be extremely toxic and there are many negatives to having this app. We as a society need to make sure we are using apps like Snapchat in a positive way and not to hurt others or bring others down.
